When you place a socket on the holder, it pushes a ball bearing inside the shaft. Once it’s loaded, a spring mechanism shoves the ball bearing out of the shaft and into the socket. This creates a secure lock between the socket and the holder. Removing a socket pushes the ball bearing back into the holder. It pops back out once you pull the socket free.
